Cyber Security Guidelines
What is IMO 2021?
By International Maritime Organization (IMO) resolution, no later than a ship’s first annual Document of Compliance audit after 1 January 2021, every Safety Management System must be documented as having included cyber risk management, in line with the International Safety Management Code.
These guidelines provide high-level recommendations to safeguard shipping from current and emerging cyber threats and vulnerabilities and include functional elements that support effective cyber risk management.
Basically; Identifying the IT connected devices, Protecting the IT network, Detecting any (possible) threats, Responding and/or acting to any threats and Recovering the network in case so required.
Shipowners need to realize cyber security is a necessity, not an accessory.
Cyber preparedness is required to meet the IMO safety requirements. In order to comply, ships must be able to demonstrate what assets, personnel and procedures are in place on board and ashore to deal with cyber risk issues, what happens if systems are compromised and who has control. Compliance will depend on having the right risk management, infrastructure and procedures in place.
