Port-IT introduces first maritime tailored NDR solution

The heightened threat of targeted and complex cyberattacks is prompting the maritime sector to look for ways to improve network security. Perpetrators continue to devise new ways to exploit the vulnerabilities of a vessels network. Security investments onboard vessels need to include detection and response – not just prevention such as a regular anti virus. NDR is a vessels best protection strategy against any cyber attack. Network detection and response (NDR) is a security solution used to detect and prevent malicious network activity, investigate and perform forensics to determine root cause, and then respond and mitigate. Therefore protecting organizations against cyber threats. Implementing NDR also gives organizations greater visibility into what is actually on the network as well as all activity occurring. This, in turn, enables security teams to identify and stop suspicious network activity rapidly and minimize its impact on daily business.

Defending against evolving threats onboard vessels
Port-IT now introduces NDR specifically developed for the Maritime Industry. Implementing NDR is regarded as an important step in protecting vessels against the increasing cyber threat in the maritime market. Port-IT NDR silently monitors the vessels network, watching for malicious events or suspicious traffic traffic, even between devices only used internally, such as the VDR and a guest PC. Once this kind of traffic is detected the solution will deploy forensics, mitigate the issue and instantly informs the Port-IT Security Operations Center (SOC) team. To detect malicious kinds of traffic it uses a combination of artificial intelligence, machine learning and user-defined policies, offering intelligent layers on which the configuration can be strengthened. Port-IT NDR uses NTA, Network Traffic Analysis. NTA does not only monitor the network perimeter, but more importantly all traffic within the network for complete coverage. NDR detects threats across the entire network, including BYOD & IoT devices and even advanced unknown attacks that other solutions have missed.

With the NDR it is not needed to install software on any device, hence it is the ultimate solution to detect malicious activity from or within a network, regardless if it is crew, business or a guest network. NDR can be used on commercial vessels and fits in perfectly on yacht networks to monitor the traffic of its guests.

Every day we are working hard to keep your vessels safe from cyber-attacks and virus threats. However, the biggest virus threat the world is facing today is not an electronic virus that could devastate computers, servers or complete IT network systems. It is a “traditional” human virus, which is now spreading wildly. We can all see what is happening globally with the COVID-19 virus. Most of us will have the urge to help their neighbour in these difficult times we are facing together. Unfortunately, in times like these we see that the cybercriminal has no conscience at all. We see a large amount of spearfishing attacks using COVID-19 virus as their subject to give people false information and to lure them to download malicious files to ransom their PCs. It is with great disgust to see that even now they are misusing the good faith of people more than ever.

We are fully aware of the troubling Corona situation and have taken the appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. All our non-essential employees work from home, and we have limited direct contact with our customers and suppliers. However, all of our services and sales activities continue as usual. Our Service Operations Center is offering 24/7 customer support – which means our customers will receive assistance whenever and wherever necessary. Our dedicated customer support engineers are very well trained and are generally able to solve your IT related problems without having an engineer onboard physically by using Port-IT Virtual Engineer.

Port-IT introduces Orilla Lite – a lighter version of its original Orilla package

Port-IT has announced the launch of a slimmed down version of its full-powered Orilla Service – offering the same core features and benefits of Orilla, at a lower cost. Orilla Lite was designed as a cost- and time-efficient solution for vessels that wish to improve the connectivity and cybersecurity onboard their vessels, without having to make large investments.

Orilla Lite provides enterprise level capabilities while minimizing the hardware and installation cost, resulting in an efficient method in improving the management and cyber security features on any vessel. Orilla Lite has a core feature set containing two components: patch management and the remote desktop gateway. The patch management component of Orilla Lite allows the user to update and patch the Operating Systems and applications used on board. The remote desktop gateway facilitates connecting to each vessel’s devices using a variety of standard network protocols, enabling better security and more control over all systems on board. Besides providing an airtime independent E-mail solution, Orilla Mail now has an opt-in feature that stores all incoming and outgoing e-mails. This extra service can be extremely valuable in case the communication PC onboard a vessel crashes. By opting in, Port-IT ensures that all e-mails will be available in case needed at no additional cost. The customer determines how long Port-IT retains the backups, with a maximum of 5 years.

Orilla Mail is a shore managed maritime E-mail solution featuring a fully integrated web-interface. The integration with Port-IT’s IRIS service means that incoming emails are scanned with a multitude of Antivirus products in order to reduce the possibility that an infection reaches the vessel to zero.
