To all our relations,

Every day we are working hard to keep your vessels safe from cyber-attacks and virus threats. The heightened threat of targeted cyber-attacks is prompting the maritime sector to look for ways to improve network security. Perpetrators continue to devise new ways to exploit the vulnerabilities of a vessels network.

However, the biggest virus threat the world is facing today is not an electronic virus that could devastate computers, servers or complete IT network systems. It is a “traditional” human virus, which is now spreading wildly. We can all see what is happening globally with the COVID-19 virus. Most of us will have the urge to help their neighbour in these difficult times we are facing together. Unfortunately, in times like these we see that the cybercriminal has no conscience at all. We see a large amount of spearfishing attacks using COVID-19 virus as their subject to give people false information and to lure them to download malicious files to ransom their PCs. It is with great disgust to see that even now they are misusing the good faith of people more than ever.

We are fully aware of the troubling Corona situation and have taken the appropriate measures to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus. All our non-essential employees work from home, and we have limited direct contact with our customers and suppliers. However, all of our services and sales activities continue as usual. Our Service Operations Center is offering 24/7 customer support – which means our customers will receive assistance whenever and wherever necessary. Our dedicated customer support engineers are very well trained and are generally able to solve your IT related problems without having an engineer onboard physically by using Port-IT Virtual Engineer.

If necessary, we can also still provide onsite assistance. Naturally if we do so, we follow the RIVM (The dutch CDC) Corona guidelines and ask our customers to respect these. So please don’t hesitate to contact us, we are more than happy to assist you with all IT issues onboard your vessel.

Stay safe, stay healthy and do not forget to stay secure.

Best regards,

Youri Hart

Port-IT introduces Orilla Lite – a lighter version of its original Orilla package

Port-IT has announced the launch of a slimmed down version of its full-powered Orilla Service – offering the same core features and benefits of Orilla, at a lower cost. Orilla Lite was designed as a cost- and time-efficient solution for vessels that wish to improve the connectivity and cybersecurity onboard their vessels, without having to make large investments.

10-10-2017 Maritime Cyber Resilience Forum

Port-IT will be attending the Digital ship maritime cyber resilience forum on the 10th of October which is free to ship owners and or managers.
We will be showcasing our products and services and can answer any complicated questions you might have about maritime IT cyber security.
Please don’t hesitate to visit us and learn more about cyber security for your vessel.

Port-IT launches maritime cyber security service

Port-IT Vanir provides maritime vessels with affordable top-class security, with proper network security it is possible to foresee the future.

Port-IT has developed a new full security package for maritime vessels, Port-IT Vanir. Port-IT worked in collaboration with WatchGuard to create a unique maritime UTM (Unified Threat Management) configuration that is completely shore manageable by Port-IT.  All computers will be protected by a custom implementation of ESET endpoint security.  Signatures will be updated every day and synced between the shore and vessel using Port-It’s specially created software. Port-IT Vanir’s endpoint security has more options than traditional antivirus such as a firewall and botnet protection, with WatchGuard software installed for multi engine detection.

“The increasing demand for maritime vessel connectivity is set to continue and as such there is a clear and immediate need for an enterprise solution,” said Youri Hart, Managing Director at Port-IT. “Budgets in shipping are still very strict and I am a big advocate of the slogan ‘if you can’t afford to protect it, you should not connect it’. This is why we have created Port-IT Vanir. To ensure vessels can be both connected and protected at an affordable price.”

The WatchGuard UTM uses highly rated security vendors for network security such as Kaspersky, Bitdefender, Websense and Lastline. “WatchGuard Unified Threat Management (UTM) appliances are designed from the ground up to focus on ease of deployment, use, and ongoing management, in addition to providing the strongest security possible. Our unique approach to network security focuses on bringing best-in-class, enterprise-grade security to any organization, regardless of size or technical expertise. This makes it ideal for tackling the unique security challenges faced by martime vessels,” said Martijn Nielen at WatchGuard.

Port-IT also provides 24/7 network security monitoring and detailed reports. These reports will contain the status of the PCs on-board and their network infrastructure. A certified network/security engineer will be able to analyze this report, draw conclusions and implement changes that will further enhance and improve the security of the network. For example, if the ECR PC is constantly trying to access a forbidden website, Port-IT Vanir will block this or monitor crew internet usage and decrease the bandwidth so that vessel critical communication will always take place at the same speeds.

The Vanir service will be monitored from Port-IT’s new Security Operating Center. This is not within the Port-IT office but in an ISO certified remote facility and has high availability features such as redundant power and multiple internet connections via various providers. The center is physically secured by biometric recognition features and a 24/7 gate security.

Vanir will be available for a monthly fee per vessel so that ship owners don’t have to take a big cash out when starting as such devices are very costly.

Earlier in 2016 Port-IT released Remote IRIS, an in-house developed, designed and built solution.
Remote IRIS is a sophisticated multi engine attachment scanner specialized in detecting zero-day viruses (Zero-day viruses are viruses that have not been detected by most Anti-Virus software) using more than 55 different Anti-Virus vendors all over the world. Port-IT quickly noticed that a more automated system was needed to offer even better protection to vessels as manually sending these files was not always done. We use these files to compare the results of IRIS and other known E-mail scanning solutions. IRIS is able to detect these viruses easily, every time. This shows the lack of protection a single scanner E-mail system has.

The IRIS scanners update multiple times a day, this in combination with the new automated implementations makes IRIS the best E-mail scanning solution on the market today.

But why use a multi-vendor approach, is one antivirus not enough?
The answer to that is not an easy yes or no.

Worldwide multi engine scanning is of upmost importance in any market, an Anti-Virus vendor in China will more quickly protect its users against a virus that is built in China than against a virus that was built in the United States. This isn’t on purpose, it’s just the effect that time zone differences have.
Although anti-virus vendors do deliver signatures during their local night-time, they can run somewhat behind as they may not necessarily be fully staffed at that time. The origin of the outbreak is also important; often the country or region where that virus was built is the region that it will be detected first. This also helps with zero-days. A zero-day in the Netherlands may have already been detected in China, with IRIS you can be protected against these kinds of threats

Using a broad spectrum approach of all these different Anti-virus Vendors we are doing everything we can to scan E-mails against the newest threats. Since our clients vessels travel all over the world, and threats differ from one country to another, we need to incorporate many different local Anti-Virus vendors into one product to offer you the best protection for your vessels.

IRIS is offered in 3 different implementation methods, fitting any digital infrastructure already in place and will help sail your ship to the shore of digital security and beyond. In our production environment we noticed that for example only 5 of the 55+ anti-virus engines successfully detected a new zero-day virus.

This means that the products of more than 50 anti-Virus vendors did not successfully detect a threat, if that product was protecting your email providers email scanning you would have received the threat and when executed would have become the victim of a ransomware attack.

Since February of 2016 we have achieved a 100% detection rate of all ransomware. The implementation of IRIS can be very simple and ship owners using IRIS can be sure that they have done everything that is possible to prevent ransomware reaching their vessels computer network. IRIS is a unique system and is designed and built by Port-IT. For existing Antivirus customers of Port-IT and based on a fair use policy Port-IT IRIS is free to use.

If you would like to learn more about IRIS, please contact Port-IT at [email protected] .
